What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture refers to the ancient Chinese healing art that uses very thin, fine needles inserted into specific points in the body in order to restore and maintain proper health and well-being. Acupuncture has been used for over 2,000 years to treat a multitude of illnesses and health concerns. The needles used in acupuncture are gently inserted into the skin and are typically painless. Once the needles are inserted, they function to stimulate the body’s natural healing capabilities.

What is a typical treatment like?
Many variations of treatment exist. Acupuncture visits typically last approximately 20-60 minutes. Each visit usually starts with a discussion about the condition being treated. The Acupuncture practitioner then will place approximately 2-20 needles into various parts of the body in order to treat the condition. Patients are usually treated either laying down or seated. Insertion of the needles is typically painless. Some may feel a light tap when the needle enters the skin. Once inserted, the needles range from -no sensation at all- to -a deep therapeutic sensation. The needles will then remain in those points for anywhere from 10-45 minutes. The needles are then removed and the visit is almost complete. Treatment may also include application of heat, soft tissue therapy, gentle electrical stimulation, nutritional advice, herbal recommendations, or exercise/lifestyle recommendations.
